Visitor analytics (Umami)

The Umami app adds a Visitors section to your Analytics page: how many people opened your store, which pages they looked at, where they came from (Google, Instagram, a WhatsApp link…), which ad or post campaigns brought them, and their phones, browsers and countries.

Umami  is a free, open-source analytics tool. It sets no cookies and keeps no personal data about your shoppers.

What you need

  • An Umami account. Use Umami Cloud (sign up at umami.is) or your own Umami server.
  • An API key from Umami, so this page can read your numbers. In Umami: Settings → API keys → Create key.

Connect it

  1. Go to Apps, find Umami under Connections and click Install.
  2. Open Apps → Umami in the sidebar.
  3. Fill in Umami address: your Umami server’s address, or cloud.umami.is for Umami Cloud.
  4. Paste your API key. It is stored locked (encrypted) and never shown again.
  5. Click Create a website for this store, or paste the Website id of a website you already added in Umami.
  6. Click Test connection. You should see “Connected to … in Umami”.
  7. Click Save.

Your store starts counting visitors right away. Open Analytics and scroll to Visitors.

Wait for cookie consent is on by default: a visitor is counted only after they allow analytics on your cookie banner. Umami sets no cookies, so you can turn this off to count every visitor until they say no. A “no” on the banner always stops counting.

Campaigns

To see which ad or post brought a visitor, add a campaign name to the link you share, for example https://yourstore.in/?utm_source=instagram&utm_campaign=diwali-sale. The Campaigns (UTM) card on Analytics lists each campaign.

If something is wrong

  • “Umami did not accept the API key”: create a new key in Umami and paste it again.
  • “Umami has no website with that id”: check the website id, or click Create a website for this store.
  • “Could not reach Umami”: check the address, and that your Umami server is running. The address must start with https://.
  • The rest of your Analytics page keeps working even when Umami cannot be reached.
